Let's face it- any commercial or economic activity creates a burden on the ecosystem.
However, ocean transport is one of the least energy consuming and most environmentally
friendly means available. Routes are usually developed in existing waters and land
acquisition is not an issue. The expense and time of developing and maintaining a waterway
is insignificant when compared to that of a railroad or highway, and it draws much less
on our earth's resources. The shipping industry is also subject to some of the strictest
international regulations on pollution, and modern ships are increasingly required to
adhere to high environmental standards.
